The Young Artist of the Year 2024 - Suvi Sysi

The Young Artist of the Year 2024, Suvi Sysi (b. 1990 NilsiƤ) works intuitively with paper, wood and clay as her materials. Her abstract works are based on colour, touch and handwork. How and from what something is made is a central part of the works.

The roots of Suvi Sysi’s work lie in the methods of printmaking. Her work is immersed in colour and a multi-step process, where the essential thing is not just the finished print but all the traces of the making. For Sysi, colour is the soul and essence of the work. From the two-dimensionality of a sheet of paper, she has moved in her installations towards a three-dimensional space, where paper can also settle, for example by piling up or flowing towards the floor. As a counterweight to paper, Suvi Sysi has used clay as her material. The repetitive characteristic of graphic art is present in her ceramics, too.
